Foundational Calligraphy
Beginner Calligraphy Class with Cindi Kordell

10:00 – 4:00 (with 1 hour lunch break)
 
In this beginner’s calligraphy class, Cindi will introduce you to the “tools of the trade” and show
you how to use them- along with basic information you will need for your calligraphy experience.
You will learn the Foundational Hand, which will provide a solid understanding of letter forms
and structure – necessary to start your journey into the Art of Beautiful Writing.
Cindi will provide you with all exemplars and guidelines, and she will demonstrate:
The Lower Case Roman Letters (minuscules)
Roman Capitals (majuscules)
She will demonstrate each letter of the alphabet and offer suggestions as you start to learn the
structure and form of all of the letters.
She will go around and work with each student as they work on learning the formations of the
letters.
She will bring some examples of her finished work, and encourage each student to use what
they’ve learned to continue their personal calligraphy journey!
FOUNDATIONAL CALLIGRAPHY SUPPLY LIST

Sumi Ink
Lay Out Paper and other paper samples
Speedball C-2 Nib & Speedball Pen-Holder
General Information about Calligraphy and specifically the Foundational Hand
Exemplars with Ductus (examples of each letter with directional strokes)
Guidelines for the Foundational Hand with C-2 Nib (necessary to execute letters with the correct
proportion)
List of Helpful Resources and Recommended Books
Things STUDENT will need to bring:
Lunch
Ruler
Pencil
Eraser
Tape
Container for Water
Paper Towels and/or Baby Wipes
**PLEASE LET CINDI KNOW IF YOU ARE LEFT-HANDED....Cindi will
have a special left-handed nib and instructions just for you, but she needs

The cost for the all day class is $60 for IAA members and $75 for
non-members. The deadline to sign-up is January 19th, 2026.
No refunds will be offered after this date. This is a sought-after
instructor and limited space is available, so sign-up early to
