Jonelle Summerfield is back for another amazing oil painting class for IAA!

This still life workshop is for serious oil painters of all levels from beginners to those who want to reinforce what they already know.  Topics will include: selecting a subject, determining the best lighting, how to optimize the composition, choosing the best materials, and stages of completing the painting.   


Jonelle will be bringing seasonal flowers, prompts and a surprise.  Participants will construct a composition and work through the stages of completing their painting.  Be prepared to start and restart with the spirit of experimentation.


Materials provided by instructor:

11 X 14 canvas

Rubber gloves

Plastic aprons


Materials students must bring:


Sketchbook and pencil

Secure brush washer jar with “Gamsol” paint thinner

Winsor & Newton oil painting medium

Metal palette Knife 

Paper towels


Paint colors you will need to bring:

Titanium White

Cadmium Yellow

Yellow Ochre

Cadmium Orange

Cadmium Red Light

Alizarin Crimson

Transparent Red Oxide

Ultramarine Blue Deep

Chromium Oxide Green

Olive Green (Rembrandt brand)

Raw Umber

Burnt Umber

Two Notes: Jonelle encourages you to invest in quality paint such as “Rembrandt” or “Gamblin” to avoid frustration! 

ALSO: Acrylic paints and watercolor paints are prohibited for this class because they require different techniques.


Brushes you will need to bring:

Flat Synthetic #10, #6, #2

Filber #10, #4, #2

Note: Jonelle encourages good quality, sharp brushes.  Frayed, overly stiff or limp, worn brushes will not produce good results.

*Biography of instructor*


Jonelle Summerfield is an oil painter from Indiana, PA. She received a degree in Interior Design from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her mother, Jolene Joyner, Became her first and most influential art teacher. While she worked as a kitchen designer, she honed her skills, taking workshops with artists she admired. She has taken workshops with Qiang Huang, Darren Kingsley, Kerry Dunn, and John Del Monte.  Jonelle’s art career began by selling work online and at the New Growth Arts Festival.  From there, she branched out into online art galleries and has exhibited in Indiana, PA; Latrobe, PA; Ligonier, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, and New York, NY. Her paintings are inspired by her travels near and far, her hobbies, domestic scenes, and her cats. The goal of her work is to depict the good things in life to provide relief from a chaotic world.
