Introduction to Blackletter Calligraphy
In this calligraphy class, Cindi will introduce you to “Blackletter”, sometimes called “Gothic” style
writing. The roots of Blackletter arose in medieval times, and has long since gained popularity
through the centuries for its compressed and dense lettering, resulting in distinctive and
dramatic style. In the world of calligraphy, Blackletter is still quite popular due to the beauty of
the structure, rhythm and spacing of the letters. Not only for text pieces, these letters are
frequently used to create patterned backgrounds and borders, dramatic headlines, bold titles
and logos, and unique artistic expressions of the letterforms.
Beginners with a basic understanding of calligraphy are welcome, as well as those with more
experience.
Cindi will provide all of the exemplars, guidelines, tools and materials needed to begin your
journey into Blackletter. She will demonstrate each letterform and work with each student to
learn the structure of the letters.
She will contact you via email around a week before the class with additional information to
maximize your workshop experience. (i.e...bring basic materials like a pencil, ruler, etc.) Don’t
forget to bring lunch, or treat yourself to one of the great paninis at The Artist Hand Gallery and
Espresso Bar.

The cost for the all day class is $60 for IAA members and $75 for
non-members. The deadline to sign-up is February 16, 2026. No
refunds will be offered after this date. This is a sought-after
instructor and limited space is available, so sign-up early to
reserve your spot!
